Dear Students,
Classes have temporarily been suspended on the Mafikeng Campus, after unrest broke out yesterday morning shortly after the disciplinary hearing of the temporarily suspended Campus Student Representative Council (CSRC) president, Mr Linda (Benz) Mabengwane, commenced.
A group of EFF student command supporters, including students from other universities in Gauteng, entered the campus and disrupted classes. These students stormed the administration building and also caused damage to other buildings on the campus. The exact extent of the damages is not known yet. These supporters allegedly also demanded that all charges against the temporarily suspended CSRC president be dropped. Clashes also broke out between NWU students and this intruding group. During these clashes, the EFF’s president of the student command broke his leg and was admitted to hospital. It is not yet known how many other students sustained injuries. Classes were already suspended yesterday, and staff has been requested not to enter the campus for the sake of their own safety. The suspension of classes will continue until the situation on campus has been normalised. This morning just after 06:00, a vehicle from Hlanganani Protection Services was petrol bombed on the campus. Four students, apparently from Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), were arrested in connection with the incident. The South African Police Service has been deployed since yesterday and is monitoring the situation. In the meanwhile the disciplinary hearing against the CSRC president is continuing. Kind regards Mr Louis Jacobs |
