The Campus Clinic on the NWU Vaal Campus will be hosting their first Wellness Day on 9 March in the parking area of Building 12. The aim of the event? To get the campus community talking about general health issues, and to check their health status.

This is the first of two annual opportunities that the Clinic affords to students to have their general health assessed and to learn more about the healthy habits that leads to a healthy lifestyle.

“Our main goal with the Wellness Day is to put a healthy lifestyle on the social agenda,” says Sister Mapeete Mulumba, the Primary Healthcare Professional on campus. “We want students to think about their health when making day-to-day decisions and we want them to realize that these decisions, good or bad, directly impact their quality of life”.

What happens on Wellness Day?
Campus Wellness Days are also loyally supported by healthcare role players outside of the campus community.  Service providers from the community are invited to introduce their services to the students by participating in the day.  Students will be able to screen their vision, test their hearing, find out their blood group, take an HIV screening test, test their blood pressure and cholesterol and have their Body Mass Index (BMI) calculated.

In the build up to Wellness Day this year, the local campus radio station, River FM is hosting an exciting competition.  Listeners are invited that to check the station’s Facebook page daily for interesting facts pertaining to general health issues.  Throughout the day reference will be made to these facts and the activation – linked to the topic of the day, will involve two lucky listeners.  The winner of each of the daily activations will go into the draw for a grand prize at the end of the campaign.  Listeners will also be given a daily word, which they will have to unscramble to make up a sentence at the end of the ten days to also stand a chance of walking away with a prize.

Be sure to listen to River FM 87.6 fm from 24 February 2016 for more information or visit the radio station’s Facebook page called NWU Vaal Riverfm 87.6 and listen carefully to hear he campaign’s slogan:  Wellness for WHO?  Wellness for YOU!

The annual Wellness Day takes place on 9 March 2016 in the parking area of Building 12 on the campus.  The programme starts at 09:00.
