Not only are were getting ready for the South African Municipal Elections on 3 August 2016, but closer to home (or campus), we are also getting ready for the Campus Student Representative Council (CSRC) elections at the North-West University Vaal Triangle Campus (NWU Vaal) which will see students putting pen to paper on 18 and 19 August 2016.

What are Municipal Elections?
Municipal elections elect councillors every five years  that will be responsible for governing a municipality for the coming five years. The municipal councils will ensure that services such as water, electricity and sanitation are kept up-to-date and of the best quality for the people living in their municipal district.

Only registered parties in South Africa may participate, and only registered citizens may vote in their municipal district. While registering to vote has now closed, the citizens of South Africa have only until 3 August to make a decision on who will be elected as the party of choice for their district!

What are CSRC Elections?
CSRC elections see bona fide registered students of the NWU Vaal going to the polling stations to elect fellow students who will become their voices for the coming 2016/2017 academic year.

As stated in the House Rules of the NWU Vaal CSRC;  the objectives of the CSRC are to promote maximum representation, transparency and accountability in search of all CSRC structures, to develop a broad participation within student community, promote their aspirations and interests.

The CSRC election process
Before a student can go and vote for their CSRC, students first have to be nominated! Any bona fide registered student (that will be continuing their studies at the NWU Vaal in 2017) and has either already served full term on the CSRC, House Committee and/or affiliated bodies is eligible.

How to be nominated/nominate?
Students can find a copy of the nomination form of eFundi (Student 24/7 or their Workspace news feed) or can fetch a copy at Building 25 G27. REMEMBER: nominations open 1 JUNE 2016 – 11 AUGUST 2016!

With the nomination form, you will need:

  • To have at least 25 signatures of registered NWU Vaal students,
  • A statement policy (not exceeding 200 words), with the following:
    • View of the world and life
    • Opinion of candidate on needs within the NWU Vaal community with possible solutions
    • Political view of candidate (should it be relevant)
  • Typed CV or Resume of candidate

The nomination form should then be handed in by Building 25 G27 BEFORE 16:00 on 11 August 2016.

Free and fair election process
The Campus conducts the election process with the guidance of the local Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). The current outgoing CSRC Chairpersn, Mr Sydney Madibo, will serve as the Chief Electoral Officer. For more information, you can contact Sydney Madibo at Sydneymadibo@outlook.com.
