NWU Vaal Campus – closed until further notice…

Dear member of the NWU Vaal Campus community,

It is with deep regret that we have to inform you that all activities on the Vaal Triangle Campus of the North-West University will be suspended with immediate effect. All indications are that we will resume our activities on Thursday, 20 October 2016.

Despite our best efforts to maintain a stable and academically conducive campus environment, today’s violent disruption by individuals of whom not all are students – which included the damaging of property, the intimidation of staff and students, as well as several acts of arson, forced us to close the campus in the interest of safety.

It remains unacceptable that the disruptive actions by a group – small in relation to the majority of students who want the academic programme to continue, has caused management to resort to this decision. We however have to ensure the safety of staff and students.

Campus Management remains open to explore avenues of dialogue and therefore the proposed mass meeting (as agreed upon by the campus management and the CSRC during a meeting on 17 October 2016), will take place at 10:00 tomorrow morning at the main gate. The purpose of this meeting is to allow students to hand over a memorandum of grievances.

Management remains committed to do everything in their power to bring stability back to the campus and to provide a safe and secure environment for staff and students. With the assistance of all stakeholders we can still work towards a point of securing the 2016 academic year on our campus.

The violent actions by students are condemned in the strongest possible terms, and with the assistance of the police, the security and all the staff and students who remain committed to the campus and what it stands for, we will move forward.

All tests and assignments scheduled to be written or completed in the interim (17 – 19 October 2016) will be rescheduled. Please refer to eFundi for lecture notes and other communication from academic staff members. Since all activities have been suspended, the library and computer labs will not be accessible. No academic or support staff members will be on Campus (with the exception of Student Supervisors at the residences).  Also note that the bus schedule for the next two days will not be in commission – except for transporting students to and from the planned meeting on 18 October 2016 at 10:00.

Residences will remain open and strict security measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of our students and staff.

For regular updates please consult the NWU Vaal Facebook Page.
