Yesterday (17 October 2016) the Campus Management met with the CSRC. One of the agenda points was a request from students to hand over a memorandum of grievances during a mass meeting. Management agreed to this request and the meeting was scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 18 October 2016 at 10:00 at the main gate. Students were bussed in from their respective residences to attend this meeting. Once the group of students gathered at the main gate the students changed their demands and insisted on having a meeting with Management and not to hand over the memorandum as it was agreed upon.
Management could not be convinced that a meaningful meeting would be possible with a group in excess of 150 students. It is Management’s belief that all avenues of discussion should be investigated and that it should take place in a structured and orderly fashion to ensure that all voices are heard.
During yesterday’s protest action five students were arrested for taking part in illegal and disruptive activities on campus. Management remains resolute that the 2016 academic year should continue within a safe and stable environment. In an effort to ensure stability and prevent any illegal activities on the campus an urgent Court Interdict was obtained on 22 September 2016. The final Court Interdict was granted on 11 October 2016.

Classes remain suspended until Thursday, 20 October 2016 – unless communicated otherwise. Please make use of the Campus’s Facebook pages (NWU Vaal and NWU Vaal Student 24/7) for regular updates.
