Sometimes group work can feel draining and nerve-wracking; trying to get your group to work together for the reward of a great mark at the end of the day. But for a group of third year BCom Marketing students of the Vaal Triangle Campus of the North-West University (NWU Vaal), the ‘hunger’ for the blessed pass mark was sated by not only winning the competition, but with a tasty reward as well!

Class, meet real world…

As part of their main assignment for a module; the third year students had to split up into groups and create an integrated marketing communication plan for a business, explains Re-An Müller, Marketing lecturer at NWU Vaal. But to step it up a notch, the assignment is also an annual competition! So not only are you ‘fighting’ to get the highest mark, but also leaving the module with the title: WINNER… This years winning group was: (drumroll…)

Polkadot Panda

Winning group Polkadot Panda, with lecturer Re-An Muller (far left), with their clients from DROS, Gerrie Booysen [Manager] and Klippies Kritzinger [Owner] (far right front).

The students created a plan for the local DROS restaurant in Vanderbijlpark, with owner, Mr Klippies Kritzinger, and Manager Gerrie Booysen acting as clients, judges, as well as naming the winners at the end of the competition. The winners would each receive a DROS voucher to go along with their title.

Previous years saw students create integrated marketing communication plans for businesses such as Ingwe Lodge (2015), Woodoc South Africa (2014) and Scotts Emulsion (2013).

And the winner is…

First Place: Polkadot Panda

  • Jotham Combrinck
  • Vanessa Grimsdell
  • Steyn Laubscher
  • Natasha McLoed
  • Jan Pieterse
  • Marinda van der Merwe

Third Place: Impress Concepts
